A True Disciple
John 8:28-36
2 Corinthians 13:5-“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?”
1. A proper belief in Jesus
Verse 30-31
Acts 16:31-“So they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.”
John 3:16-18-“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 20:31-“but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”
1 Corinthians 1:18, 21-“ For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God…For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.”
2. Strives to continually obey Jesus
Verses 31-32, 34, 36
Matthew 28:20-“teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.”
Philippians 2:13-“for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
1 John 2:3-5-“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”
Ephesians 2:8-10-“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
John 14:15-“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
John 14:6-“I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
John 15:4-8-“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”
