Proverbs 4:20-27

1. The control of our thought life

Verse 23

Proverbs 23:7-“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” 

Genesis 6:5-7-“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them”

Romans 12:2-“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

2. The power of our thought life

Verses 20-21, 23

Proverbs 6:25-28-“ Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids. For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a crust of bread; and an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. Can a man take fire to his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared?”

Matthew 5:27-28-“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” 

Philippians 4:8-“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” 

Psalm 119:11-“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”

Hebrews 4:12-“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” 

3. The impact of our thought life

Matthew 12:34-“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
