Disciples are Called to Love
John 13:34-35
1. We have been commanded to love
Verse 34
Matthew 22:37-40-“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Romans 5:5-“Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
2. Jesus has shown us how to love
Verse 34
1 John 3:18-“My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deedand in truth.”
Romans 5:8-“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Luke 6:27-28, 32-33-“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you…But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.”
1 John 3:16-“By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
